Knife-Wielding Thug Robs Taxi Driver in Chatham
On Friday 13 August 2021, Matthew Lycett flagged down a taxi on Maidstone Road, Chatham – knife in hand. He asked the driver to take him to Bryant Street, then leaned forward and pressed the blade against the driver’s ribs.
While threatening to cut him, Lycett reached into the driver’s jacket pocket and nicked £160 in cash. He demanded more money before jumping out and making a run for it.
Quick Police Work Nabs Violent Robber
Thanks to the taxi’s security cameras, police identified Lycett swiftly. He was arrested on 17 August at his home in Mercian Close, Rochester, where officers also seized the clothing he wore during the crime.
The victim picked Lycett out in an ID parade. The 28-year-old was charged with robbery and possession of a bladed weapon in public.
Four Years and Six Months Behind Bars
At Maidstone Crown Court, Lycett pleaded guilty. On Friday 12 November, he was handed a prison sentence of four years and six months, plus an extended four-year licence period. He must serve at least two thirds of his sentence before release.
Detective Constable Dan Bister said: “Lycett is a violent offender who thought nothing of arming himself with a weapon and threatening to harm his victim. Taxi drivers should be able to go about their business without fear of being robbed at knifepoint. Chatham is certainly a safer place now this dangerous criminal is behind bars.”
