Asda Worker Racks Up £6,200 Taxi Bill on Company Account
An Asda employee ran up a jaw-dropping £6,217 bill using the supermarket’s Cabfind taxi account. The cheeky worker even booked a 115-mile round trip from Maidstone to London just to visit his mum – all paid for by Asda.
Unauthorized Rides Across Kent and London
Leroy Helegbe, 30, exploited a taxi account meant strictly for managers and emergencies. Despite being an hourly-paid staff member with no official access, he made 17 bookings between January and March. His rides included trips from Maidstone to Edgware in north-west London and back.
‘Emergency-Only’ Account Abused Over Months
At Sevenoaks Magistrates’ Court, prosecutor Sidumiso Moyo said the account was “rarely used” and designed solely for urgent cases like ferrying sick staff. She branded the spree “fraudulent activity over a sustained period” and a “breach of trust.”
Repeat Offender Given Suspended Sentence
Helegbe, now working for Network Rail, has previous dishonesty convictions from 2018 and 2021. He pleaded guilty to 17 counts of fraud by false representation.
The court sentenced him to a 12-week suspended jail term, 120 hours of unpaid work, and 10 days of rehabilitation. He must repay £3,600 to Asda.
“We considered custody but are suspending the sentence due to your current work and real chance of rehabilitation. You need to be really careful — dishonesty erodes trust,” warned Chair of the bench Mr Knight.
