Police Officer Charged with Death by Dangerous Driving After Bristol Crash
Officer Faces Court Over Fatal Pursuit
An Avon and Somerset Police officer is set to face charges of causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal crash in Bristol city centre. The 38-year-old constable, who was behind the wheel of an unmarked police car, appears at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 12 September.
Deadly Collision on Newfoundland Circus
The crash happened on 5 November 2021 during a pursuit of a Volkswagen Tiguan that failed to stop for police. The Tiguan collided with a Honda Jazz, seriously injuring its driver, who later died in hospital.
Investigation by IOPC Led to Charges
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched an investigation after Avon and Somerset Police referred the incident in November 2021. After a thorough probe, the IOPC handed over evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which authorised charges under the Road Traffic Act 1988.
Officer’s Identity Kept Under Wraps
The officer faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving, with an alternative charge of causing death by careless driving. Legal reps are seeking to keep the officer’s identity anonymous, so no name has been released yet. The case will continue as investigations proceed.
