Labour Launches Legal Fight Over £200m PPE Contracts Linked to Baroness Michelle Mone
Labour Demands Transparency on PPE Deals
Labour is gearing up to take the government to court over secretive contracts handed to PPE Medpro, a firm tied to Tory peer Baroness Michelle Mone. These lucrative contracts, worth over £200 million, were awarded at the start of the pandemic amid fears of cosy connections and conflicts of interest.
Baroness Mone Denies Profiting, Takes Leave from House of Lords
Best known for founding lingerie brand Ultimo, Lady Mone has fiercely denied profiting from the PPE deals after recommending the company to ministers. Her office announced: “With immediate effect, Baroness Mone will be taking a leave of absence from the House of Lords to clear her name of unjust allegations.”
During her hiatus, she won’t attend House sittings, vote, or claim allowances.
Commons to Vote on Contract Disclosure
Labour introduced a humble address motion probing to force the release of PPE contract documents to the Commons Public Accounts Committee. The binding vote is set for Tuesday, with Tory MPs unlikely to be whipped to oppose, raising chances contracts will be scrutinised.
Investigations Mount Amid Huge Profits Claims
The Lords standards watchdog has opened a probe into Baroness Mone’s alleged role securing contracts but paused it pending other criminal investigations.
The Guardian reports Lady Mone and her children received £29 million from PPE Medpro’s profits. However, she and her legal team insist she has no “role or function” and is “in no way connected to PPE Medpro.”
Public Outcry Over Pandemic Contract Transparency
This scandal adds fuel to public concern over how government contracts were handed out during the crisis. Labour continues pushing hard for clear answers on the handling of vital pandemic funds.
