Rape Survivor Breaks Silence After Life-Shattering Attack in Leicester

A young woman in her 20s has revealed the devastating impact a brutal rape has had on her life, including the painful struggle to bond with the child she was carrying at the time of the assault.

Aaron Mason Jailed for 5 Years

Aaron Mason, 23, of Fosse Road Central, Leicester, was sentenced to five years in prison on Monday, 4 March at Leicester Crown Court. He was found guilty of rape following a January trial. The horrific attack happened in May 2019 after a night out with mutual friends.

Victim Speaks Out Despite Right to Remain Anonymous

Speaking out for the first time, the brave survivor — who remains anonymous under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 — detailed how the assault shattered her life.

“Since I was assaulted by Aaron Mason my life has never been the same,” she said.

She revealed she was unaware she was pregnant when the attack took place, only finding out a few days later.

“Although I knew my son was not fathered by the defendant, it made me feel distant from my growing child. The rape affected how I felt about the whole pregnancy.”

Terrifying Night in West Leicester

The offence occurred while both victim and Mason were staying at the same address in West Leicester. After going to separate beds, the victim woke in the early hours to find Mason in bed with her, with her jeans and underwear pulled down.

When confronted, Mason gave no explanation for his actions. Police launched an investigation, confirming a serious sexual offence had taken place. Mason was charged in 2020 following work by specialist detectives.

Ongoing Trauma and Support

The victim revealed the deep emotional scars left behind:

  • Struggling profoundly for four years
  • Feeling guilt and becoming fiercely protective of her son
  • Bad dreams haunting her nights
  • Difficulty trusting men, losing many male friends
  • Longing to regain confidence and feel safe again

Detective Constable Anna Pulsford of the Signal team, dedicated to investigating rape and sexual assault, praised the survivor’s courage.

“The courage and strength the victim has shown throughout has been truly commendable,” DC Pulsford said. “While today’s sentencing will not erase the pain, I hope it helps her move forward.”

She also highlighted the vital role of the victim’s Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA) from Freeva, who provided ongoing practical and emotional support.

Caroline Beckett, Freeva’s Sexual Violence Services Manager, added:

“Freeva puts the victim at the heart of all support, encouraging emotional resilience throughout the long journey from reporting abuse to court and beyond.”

This case shines a light on the ongoing challenges survivors face and the crucial support that helps them rebuild their lives.
