Man Jailed for Nine Years After Deliberately Running Woman Down in Brighton

A chilling attack in Brighton has landed a man behind bars for nine years. Fharharde Uddin, 28, was convicted after he deliberately rammed his vehicle into a woman he knew, leaving her fighting for her life.

Brutal Attack on Brighton Street

The shocking incident unfolded on August 19, 2023, in Whitehawk Crescent. Uddin, homeless at the time, smashed into the woman with his car, causing catastrophic injuries. Emergency teams rushed to the scene and performed urgent surgery to save her life.

Attempt to Kidnap After Collision

In a disturbing twist, witnesses saw Uddin trying to force the badly injured woman into his car’s back seat. Passersby raised the alarm, leading to a rapid police response.

Police Investigation Leads to Conviction

Sussex Police Major Crime Team launched an extensive probe. Uddin was arrested and initially charged with attempted murder and perverting the course of justice. At Lewes Crown Court on December 6, 2024, he pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice. The attempted murder charge was dropped.

On July 25, 2025, at Hove Crown Court, Uddin was sentenced to nine years behind bars.

“This case shows domestic abuse can happen anywhere, not just behind closed doors,” said Detective Sergeant Jack Sagar. “Perpetrators must be held accountable. If you’re suffering abuse, help is available — you’re not alone.”
