Brave Bystander Helps Police Nab Violent Brighton Attacker

A thug who viciously attacked two police officers in Brighton has been jailed for 26 weeks. The dramatic arrest was only possible thanks to a courageous member of the public who stepped in to help cops during the violent scuffle.

Violent Scene on London Road

At 9.08am on Thursday, April 10, police responded to reports of a drunken man hurling abuse at pedestrians on London Road. Officers tried to calm Andrew Hipkiss, 40, of no fixed address, but he turned hostile and refused to cooperate.

When police moved to detain him, Hipkiss made a run for it, sparking a tense foot chase through the busy city centre.

Hero Bystander Trips Suspect, Aiding Arrest

Amid the chaos, a quick-thinking passer-by waiting to cross the road tripped Hipkiss, allowing officers to get a grip on the violent suspect. But the thug fought fiercely — punching, spitting, and even biting officers.

Both cops had to be treated in hospital for their injuries.

Jail Time and Compensation Ordered

Hipkiss appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on April 11. He pleaded guilty to three counts of resisting arrest and two charges of assaulting an emergency worker. The court handed down a 26-week custodial sentence and ordered Hipkiss to pay £200 in compensation.

Superintendent Petra Lazar slammed the attack: “Hipkiss’s behaviour was appalling and completely unacceptable. Police officers should never have to face violence while simply doing their jobs. Our officers protect the public and keep communities safe. We’re pleased the courts have handed down a significant custodial sentence.”

Sussex Police Hail ‘Community Courage’

Sussex Police praised the brave bystander’s quick action, calling it “community courage” that helped prevent serious harm and ensured Hipkiss was brought to justice.
