Britain’s Youngest Female Paedophile Set for Release After Six Years

A former Swindon nursery worker, Sophie Elms, who became Britain’s youngest female convicted paedophile, is due for release next month. She was jailed six years ago for horrific sexual offences against children as young as two.

Shocking Crimes by Teen Nursery Worker

Sophie Elms, from Royal Wootton Bassett, was just 17 when she admitted to multiple serious child sex offences. In 2019, she was handed a prison sentence of seven years and ten months at Swindon Crown Court.

Her charges included:

  • Sexual assault of a child by penetration
  • Sexual assault of a child by touching
  • Distributing indecent images of children
  • Possession of indecent images of children
  • Possession of extreme pornographic images involving an animal

The court was told none of the crimes occurred at the nursery or college where Elms was studying childcare. She will be released in September under strict licence conditions preventing her from returning to the area of her offences.

Police and Community Outraged

Detective Inspector Simon Childe, who led the investigation, said the case “shocked the local community as well as those further afield.” He added:

“Elms is just 18 years old, making her one of the youngest women in the country to be convicted of these types of offences. At the time she was studying childcare with plans to work with young children. I am extremely grateful to my team who prevented her from ever working with children again.”

DI Childe also applauded the strength of the victims’ families and confirmed they received specialist support throughout the case and will continue to do so.

Devastating Impact on Families

During sentencing, a parent described the impact on their family as “unimaginable” and “horrific.” The case captured national attention due to its severity and Elms’ young age at conviction.

Elms remains subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will be closely monitored following her release.
