Burglars Caught After Crawling Through Dog Flap in South Cambridgeshire Heist
A man has been jailed for more than four years after breaking into a South Cambridgeshire home through a dog flap and stealing £5,000 worth of valuables. Winston Papalaka, 28, from Crystal Palace, was sentenced to four years and six months on July 29 following a dramatic burglary in June 2021.
The Daring Crime
Papalaka teamed up with 43-year-old Ben Hatto to force their way into the property by squeezing through a dog flap. Once inside, they ransacked the house, making off with a laptop, three watches, diamond and sapphire earrings, a Tiffany gold ring, plus a stash of cash.
Caught Red-Handed by Sharp-Eyed Witnesses
Their bold raid did not go unnoticed. A roofer working nearby spotted Papalaka lugging a laptop bag and tossing some stolen items onto the street. Meanwhile, a vigilant resident saw Hatto acting suspiciously outside the house and ringing her video doorbell. When questioned, Hatto claimed he was only asking for directions to the guided busway.
Arrests and Court Drama
- Both men were arrested and charged with burglary.
- Papalaka denied the charges but was found guilty by a jury.
- Hatto has admitted guilt and faces sentencing in September.
Police Praise Community Vigilance
“Papalaka showed complete disregard for the victim by throwing stolen goods onto the street,” said Detective Constable Lisa Bacon. “I want to thank the eagle-eyed residents who spotted suspicious behaviour — from the woman who noticed men outside her home to the roofer and neighbours who reported seeing jewellery scattered nearby. Their observations, though small, were vital in cracking this case.”
Community Impact and Justice Served
This case highlights the power of neighbourhood watchfulness and cooperation with law enforcement. Thanks to quick thinking witnesses, justice has been delivered — and a message sent to burglars that the community refuses to be victimised.
With Papalaka behind bars, all eyes are now on Hatto’s sentencing this September as residents hope for a tough stance to keep their streets safe.
