Speeding Driver Crashes Head-On, Ditches Car and Bolts from Scene

This is the jaw-dropping moment 23-year-old Joseph Henderson smashes into oncoming traffic – then flees on foot, abandoning his car and the victim behind.

Horror Crash Caught on CCTV

The shocking smash unfolded on August 16, 2018, in Gateshead. CCTV footage shows Henderson dangerously overtaking on Landscape Terrace, Greenside, before a head-on collision with another vehicle.

Despite the crash, Henderson stumbles out of his Skoda Octavia and runs away without checking on those he hit, leaving wreckage in his wake. Amazingly, victims escaped serious injury, but both cars were deemed write-offs.

Henderson Arrested After Police Hunt

At the time, Henderson was already disqualified from driving. Police launched an investigation, finding his phone dumped in a nearby field thanks to a sniffer dog. Forensic experts matched his DNA to the Skoda’s airbag.

The Chopwell man was arrested but claimed brake failure caused him to lose control. Initially denying dangerous driving, he later caved and pleaded guilty on September 7, admitting his reckless speed was to blame.

Police Slam ‘Appalling’ Driving—Jail Looms

Neighbourhood Inspector Warren Sturrock blasted the driver: “This is one of the most appalling cases of driving I have ever seen. He is lucky no one was killed.”

“Even if his brakes were failing, it doesn’t excuse his excessive speed or running off after a serious crash. He showed zero concern for anyone’s safety.”

“I’m grateful to all officers and witnesses who helped bring Henderson to justice.”

Joseph Henderson, a father-of-two from Severn Street, Chopwell, faces jail. He’s currently out on bail with an interim driving ban. His sentencing is set for November 11 at Newcastle Crown Court.
