Chris Kaba Linked to Deadly East London Nightclub Gun Attack

Chris Kaba, the 24-year-old shot dead by police in South London last September, is now believed to be involved in a thrilling nightclub shooting just days before his death.

Police say Kaba was one of five men suspected of plotting to murder a rival at a Notting Hill Carnival after-party held at Oval Space nightclub in East London.

Nightclub Gun Attack Leaves Man Fighting for Life

The victim, 23, was at the Cambridge Heath venue in the early hours of August 30 when a gunman chased him outside and shot him twice in the legs after firing on the dancefloor.

Rushed to Royal London Hospital under armed guard, he survived and is expected to make a full recovery.

Four men appeared in Thames Magistrates Court on October 28, charged with conspiracy to murder. They have been remanded in custody and will face trial at the Old Bailey next year.

Prosecutors say Kaba was not only involved in plotting the attack but was also present during the shooting.

The Fatal Police Shooting of Chris Kaba

Just a week after the nightclub shooting, Kaba was fatally shot by armed police in Streatham Hill, South London, on September 5. Officers had been covertly tracking the Audi Q8 Kaba was driving after it triggered an ANPR alert linked to a firearms incident the previous day.

The Audi was not registered to Kaba and police didn’t know who was driving.

When Kaba’s vehicle entered Kirkstall Gardens, armed officers attempted to stop him. A witness said Kaba tried to ram a police car to avoid being stopped.

One officer, known as NX121, fired a single shot through the windscreen, hitting Kaba. No firearms were found in the vehicle.

Family Demand Justice, Police Probe Ongoing

Kaba’s family claim race played a role in his death and say he was trying to turn his life around. He was an expectant father, with his girlfriend due in January. Relatives insist his criminal record should not define him or justify what happened.

The officer who shot Kaba was initially placed on restricted duties but was later suspended amid public pressure.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) launched a homicide investigation, with a potential murder or manslaughter charge against the officer. The probe could take up to nine months.

Kaba’s Troubled Past

  • In 2019, Kaba was sentenced to four years for possession of an imitation firearm linked to a 2017 shooting in Canning Town.
  • He was released on probation but jailed again in 2020 after driving uninsured with a knife in his car.
  • Earlier this year, Kaba was served with a 28-day domestic violence protection order concerning the mother of his unborn child.

Despite his background, family say Kaba was heading in the right direction and wanted to become an architect.

Club Closed and Legal Proceedings Underway

Following the shooting at Oval Space, the club’s licence was revoked. Police say they responded at 4.25am on August 30 to reports of a gunshot. Four men accused of conspiracy to murder are due at the Old Bailey on November 25.
