Boxing Day Hunt in Lewes Erupts Into Chaos – Multiple Arrests as Tensions Boil Over
Scenes Turn Ugly on Boxing Day
The traditional Boxing Day hunt in Lewes exploded into chaos this year. Fights broke out among spectators along Lewes High Street, near the Crown Court, as rival factions of hunt supporters and opponents faced off. The atmosphere was tense, with emotions running high on both sides.
Hounds, Horses and Heated Protests
The Southdown and Eridge Hunt paraded their horses and hounds through the High Street, but cheers quickly mixed with boos. The crowd’s divided reaction laid bare the town’s deep split over the controversial hunting tradition.
Seven Arrested After Affray
Police say seven people were arrested after reports of affray at the event on Tuesday (26 December). Among them were two men aged 24 and 26, plus three older men aged 35, 38 and 52. Most were released without further action, while a 49-year-old man received a community resolution.
A police spokesperson confirmed: “Seven people were arrested following reports of affray at the Boxing Day hunt parade in Lewes.”
Serious Charges for One Man
However, one man is facing more serious trouble. Cainin Woodhead, 53, from Burgess Hill, was charged with using threatening behaviour intending to cause fear or provoke unlawful violence. He is due to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 1 February 2024.
Boxing Day Hunt Sparks Fresh Debate
