Cop’s Epic Challenge Year Raises £6,500 for Stroke Charity

Detective Sergeant Dan Thrale is closing out 2023 after an incredible year of fundraising and heart. His mission? To support the Stroke Association in honour of his dad, Patrick, who suffered a major ischemic stroke in February 2022.

A Challenge for Every Letter of Patrick

Dan didn’t just set one challenge—he crafted seven, each inspired by the letters in his dad’s name, with help from his children and Patrick’s grandchildren:

  • P – Playing 365 holes of golf at par
  • A – Giving up alcohol for a whole year
  • T – A tennis marathon of 26 sets
  • R – Running between his dad’s childhood homes in a “Roots run”
  • I – Taking on a grueling Ironman triathlon
  • C – Volunteering at Havens Hospices
  • K – Kids set their own challenges inspired by Patrick’s grandchildren

From Court to Course to Ironman

Dan’s feats are no small potatoes. From smashing 365 golf holes to battling through 29 tennis sets in just 13 hours, he’s pushed his limits. The ironman in Klagenfurt, Austria, was the toughest yet — a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile cycle, and a full marathon on foot. Dan admits he was no seasoned swimmer, but he smashed it.

“Money’s tight these days, so I wanted to earn every penny raised,” Dan said. “Finishing that last run and nearing the year’s end, I’m filled with relief and pride. I’ve raised over £6,500 so far and couldn’t be happier.”

Family, Grit, and Giving Back

Patrick is now stable but needs 24/7 care thanks to Dan’s mum. Dan’s tireless effort has been a tribute and a way to give back to the community supporting his family. Over 100 volunteering hours at Hadleigh hospice highlight his commitment.

Dan recently switched roles, moving from the Basildon Domestic Abuse Investigation Team to Southend CID. His colleagues and loved ones have been rock-solid supporters through every challenge.

Patrick summed it up with pride: “My son’s a Superman.”
