Choirmaster Charged with 58 Child Sex Offences Spanning Decades
Mark Burgess, 66, from Hilsea, has been hit with 58 charges of historic child sex crimes. The former choirmaster faces counts including buggery, indecent assault, gross indecency, inciting sexual activity, and unlawful sexual touching involving 11 children under 16.
Abuse Alleged During Choir Leadership from 1976 to 2009
The offences reportedly took place while Burgess led All Saints Choir in Portsmouth and Westbourne Choir in Sussex between 1976 and 2009. After his arrest by Hampshire Constabulary’s Operation Marmion detectives, Burgess was bailed to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on 3 March.
Police Urge Victims and Witnesses to Speak Out
Authorities are urging anyone affected by sexual abuse to come forward. Victims can confidentially contact Hampshire Police on 101 or reach out to support services such as ChildLine (0800 11 11) and the NSPCC (0808 800 5000).
New leads suggest Burgess may have been involved with other youth choirs. Police are actively warning these groups and ask anyone with information or contact with Burgess to call 101 immediately.
