Police Launch Xmas Crackdown on Drink and Drug Drivers
Police are stepping up efforts to slam the brakes on drink and drug driving this Christmas. Officers want everyone to think twice before getting behind the wheel impaired during the festive season.
Zero Tolerance on the Roads
Throughout December, cops will demand breath tests from all drivers caught committing moving traffic offences — no matter if they suspect drink driving or not. Those suspected of drug driving will be given instant roadside drugwipe tests and could face arrest for a blood sample analysis.
Inspections won’t just be random. Intelligence-led fixed site checks will also be in force, alongside officers chatting to motorists about the dangers of driving under the influence.
Harsh Stats and Stark Warnings
Inspector Matthew Setchell, Devon and Cornwall Roads Policing, slammed the dangers: “Drink and drug driving still accounts for 15% of road deaths and nearly 10,000 casualties nationally every year.”
“You don’t have to be legally drunk to be charged. Even below the limit, if police think you’re unfit, you can be arrested. Don’t risk it.”
“This isn’t just about you — it could kill or seriously injure others. Plan ahead: leave your car, call a taxi, or get a designated driver.”
Devon’s Split Tier Govt Rules Could Spark Trouble
Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez warned of confusing Covid tiers in Devon and Cornwall. Cornwall is Tier 1 where you can have a drink at the pub, but Devon is Tier 2 with stricter rules requiring a substantial meal.
“People near the border might be tempted to drive into Cornwall to drink. But this is a disaster waiting to happen,” she said. “Driving after drinking could cost your licence, your job, or even land you in prison.”
“2020’s been grim enough — don’t make it worse by risking drink or drug driving this Christmas.”
Appeal for Public Help
Police Sergeant Owen Messenger urged the public to help stop dangerous drivers before tragedy strikes. “If you know someone about to drive drunk or drugged, call 999 with details of the vehicle and direction.”
