Historic rapist finally locked up after DNA breakthrough

Decades-Old Horror Brought to Justice

Abdul Basith, 10 years behind bars after his DNA linked him to a brutal 1999 rape in Bethnal Green. The Londoner from Upton Park was caught only after a routine arrest for another offence triggered a re-investigation.

Night Out Turns Nightmare

The victim, in her 20s, was stranded in Leicester Square on 6 March 1999, struggling to find a taxi home with little cash. Basith offered a ride, and she took it — a decision that led to a horrific attack.

During the journey, Basith pulled into a small car park and assaulted her. He later stopped near Bethnal Green, locked the car doors, and brutally raped and attacked her again despite her desperate resistance.

DNA Breakthrough Cracks Cold Case

The victim was found traumatised, rescued by a passer-by who brought her to a police station. Despite a thorough hunt, officers couldn’t find Basith at the time. The case lay cold for years.

That changed in 2020 when Basith’s DNA entered the system following an unrelated arrest. The match to the 1999 crime scene evidence reopened the case, finally enabling police to arrest and charge him.

Victim Gets Long-Awaited Closure

Detective Constable Amy Laybourn said: “This woman suffered a terrible ordeal which she has lived with for many years. It has taken several decades for Basith to be brought to justice but thankfully that has finally happened and we hope it has brought the victim the closure she deserves.”

“The Met is committed to tackling violence against women and girls. Anyone who reports will receive specialist support, and we will do everything to bring offenders to justice.”

Basith was found guilty at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 23 June and sentenced on 6 November to 10 years in prison for rape and indecent assault.
