Boy Injured in Bournemouth E-Scooter Crash at Air Festival
A 12-year-old boy from Christchurch was rushed to Poole Hospital with a suspected fractured collarbone after a collision involving an e-scooter near Boscombe Pier. The accident happened around 1pm on Friday, 3 September 2021, during the Bournemouth Air Festival’s second day.
E-Scooter Rider Quizzed by Police
Dorset Police have questioned the e-scooter rider, a man in his 30s from Lancashire, on suspicion of driving offences under The Road Traffic Act. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
Legal Trial Scooter vs. Illegal Use
The scooter involved was hired through Beryl as part of a government-approved trial in Bournemouth and Poole. These official rental e-scooters come with a reduced speed limit and are legal to ride in specified areas.
However, privately owned e-scooters remain illegal on pavements, cycle lanes, promenades, and public lands such as parks. Dorset Police continue cracking down on illegal e-scooter riders under their Operation Relentless, focusing on anti-social behaviour.
Police Clampdown: Warnings and Seizures
- Over 40 private e-scooter riders stopped and warned since January.
- Riders asked to sign agreements promising to stop illegal riding.
- Police empowered to seize e-scooters used illegally or linked to crime.
The force held two special enforcement days over the summer targeting unlawful e-scooter use, signalling zero tolerance for reckless riding on Dorset’s public spaces.
