Downham Way in Lewisham was closed for over two hours today (September 23) following a major police operation. Emergency services flooded the area, triggering widespread disruption for local residents and commuters.
Loud Bangs as Police Break Down Door
Locals described hearing multiple “loud bangs” as officers forced their way into a property. The Territorial Support Group, specialists in public order and serious incidents, were called in to handle the situation. Nearby schools locked down briefly to keep children safe, but those restrictions have now been lifted.
Ambulance Service Called, But No Injuries
The London Ambulance Service attended the scene but confirmed no one required treatment. A spokesperson said:
“We sent an incident response officer and members of our Tactical Response Unit to the scene. We were there as a precaution and fortunately there were no patients for us.”
Bus Chaos as Routes Diverted
- Bus routes 136, 181, and 336 were rerouted due to the closure.
