Downing Street Slams Trump Over “Wrong” Afghanistan Claims
Downing Street has hit back at Donald Trump after the ex-US President accused NATO allies of holding back during the Afghanistan war. The British government branded Trump “wrong” for downplaying the role of UK troops.
They pointed to the huge sacrifice made by British forces over 20 years, remembering 457 lives lost and countless more wounded or traumatised.
Political Heavyweights Unite to Defend British Troops
The Prime Minister’s official spokesperson said the UK’s sacrifice was for national security and in response to an attack on an ally. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer voiced pride in British troops, calling their bravery “unmatched.”
Defence Secretary John Healey slammed Trump’s comments as disrespectful. He hailed the fallen soldiers as “heroes who gave their lives for our nation.” Healey also reminded that NATO’s Article 5 was only triggered once—after 9/11—and Britain answered the call straight away.
Strong UK-US Ties Weather Trump Storm
Despite the row, Downing Street stressed the deep bond between London and Washington. The relationship remains “one of the closest on security, defence, and trade,” having survived “significant conflicts” over the years.
Officials declined to say if Sir Keir would demand an apology from Trump, or whether talks with the former president are on the cards.
