Clumsy Dealer Busted After Bizarre Escape Bid in Newark
A bungling drug dealer’s desperate dash for freedom in Newark ended in jail – and it couldn’t have been more humiliating.
Police Spot Suspicious Activity
Undercover officers on a secret drug op locked eyes on 22-year-old Edmund Mhembere sitting in a car with the engine running. When cops moved in, Mhembere refused to step out and appeared to be hiding something.
Escape Attempt Fizzles Out
Officers pulled him from the vehicle and found cannabis on his person. But they weren’t convinced that was all. Before they could arrest him, Mhembere made a dash across the Mather Road car park, hurling his mobile phone over a wall in a frantic attempt to wipe out evidence.
The cops stopped him just a few yards later and retrieved the phone.

Back at the station, police hit the jackpot. Underneath Mhembere’s clothes lay 50 wraps of crack cocaine. A phone analysis confirmed he was deep into drug dealing.
Working with the Drug Focus Desk, officers charged Mhembere quickly. Within 24 hours of his January 22 arrest, the Bulwell man confessed to possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, plus possession of Class B.
He was locked up until his sentencing at Nottingham Crown Court on March 11, where he was slammed with a hefty 3½-year jail term.
