Drug Driver Jailed for 9 Years After Deadly A350 Crash
A dangerous drug driver has been locked up for nine years following a fatal smash on the A350 in April 2022.
Head-On Collision Claims Life of Elderly Driver
Ben Clough, 31, from Sambourne Gardens, Warminster, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving under the influence of drink or drugs at Salisbury Crown Court on Thursday (14/12).
On April 4, 2022, Clough was behind the wheel of a Range Rover on the A350 Yarnbrook when he crossed the central white lines and crashed head-on into a Nissan X-Trail driven by 69-year-old Robert Godfrey from Westbury.
Tragically, Robert died at the scene.
Clough Caught With Cocaine in System
Tests showed Clough had cocaine in his system. He was breathalysed and drug wiped before being arrested.
Community road safety officer PC Charlotte Sartin said:
“Firstly, I’d like to pay tribute to Robert’s family for their courage and bravery throughout this ordeal. On April 4 last year, Clough put many people’s lives at risk by choosing to get behind the wheel while under the influence of cocaine. Unfortunately, his actions led to the death of Robert.”
PC Sartin revealed that Clough was caught again driving under the influence of cocaine in February this year while out on bail, a shocking repeat offence.
She added:
“Clough’s incredibly reckless and dangerous actions had already led to the death of Robert and it’s shocking to think he willingly chose to drive while under the influence of drugs again. Nothing can bring Robert back but hopefully this lengthy sentence will bring his family some closure and lead Clough to reflect on his actions.”
Police Crackdown on Drink and Drug Driving This December
The police are running a month-long Drink/Drug Drive campaign throughout December. Officers are carrying out early morning and late-night vehicle checks targeting drivers suspected of being over the limit or under the influence of drugs.
The message is clear: don’t risk it.
