Firefighters Warn After Eastbourne E-Bike Battery Blaze

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is sounding the alarm over the dangers of charging batteries improperly. The warning comes after a fire broke out in a shared house on Whitley Road, Eastbourne, on the evening of Wednesday, 13 March 2024.

Blaze Quickly Tamed by Brave Crews

Emergency teams jumped into action at 7.27pm, dispatching two fire engines from Eastbourne station. Firefighters, decked out in breathing gear, doused the flames with hose reel and covering jets, successfully extinguishing the fire before it could spread further.

E-Bike Battery To Blame – Safety Reminders Issued

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire started from an e-bike battery charged in a communal area of the property. This sparked urgent reminders about the risks of charging batteries in shared spaces where escape routes can be blocked and fires can start unnoticed.

One person needed medical treatment and was taken into paramedic care after the incident.

Fire Crew Launch ‘Hot Strike’ Campaign to Boost Awareness

Alongside tackling the fire, firefighters are ramping up safety advice through a ‘hot strike’ initiative, visiting communities to deliver tailored fire prevention tips — particularly around charging e-bikes and e-scooters safely.

Station Manager Protection Scott Saunders said: “People don’t always realise the risks linked to charging e-bikes and e-scooters. Always buy from reputable suppliers, and charge and store your devices safely to protect your families and homes. If you keep them indoors, never block escape routes or exits.”
