Three Teens Face Murder Trial Over Brutal Machete Attack in South-East London
Three teenagers are on trial at the Old Bailey accused of murdering 18-year-old Daejaun Campbell in a savage machete attack on Eglinton Road, Abbey Wood, last September.
The defendants are 18-year-old Jacob Losiewicz, 19-year-old Marko Balaz—both from Abbey Wood—and a 17-year-old boy, whose identity is protected by law. All deny murder, but the youngest has admitted carrying a machete in public.
“Targeted” Machete Attack in Abbey Wood
The brutal attack took place on September 22, 2024. Prosecutor Mukul Chawla KC told jurors the group “targeted” Daejaun as he walked past a house on Eglinton Road.
“Two of the defendants, Marko Balaz and [the 17-year-old], physically attacked Daejaun Campbell while the third, Jacob Losiewicz, was close by encouraging them,” said Chawla.
CCTV footage allegedly shows the 17-year-old picking up the bloody machete used in the stabbing. Witnesses reported hearing desperate screams for help—one counted “three to four screams of distress.”
Possible County Lines Drug Link Behind Attack
The motive remains unclear, but police suspect Daejaun was involved in drugs and cash, possibly linked to county lines exploitation. Prosecutors say Daejaun “may have been used as a carrier and supplier of drugs” due to his young age and vulnerability.
During the violent assault, Daejaun fought back, throwing a large knife that shattered on a nearby metal railing. Despite his efforts, he later died from his injuries.
Old Bailey Trial Continues
The trial began on June 20, 2025, and continues at the Old Bailey. All three accused deny murder charges. The 17-year-old’s plea guilty to possession of an offensive weapon has been accepted by the court.
The community remains on edge as the court seeks justice for Daejaun Campbell’s tragic death.
