Five Bulgarians Quit Silent as Russian Spy Ring Allegations Rock UK
In a gripping Westminster Magistrates’ Court drama, five Bulgarian nationals were hauled before the judge, accused of running a Russian spy ring on UK soil. The suspects—Orlin Roussev, Bizer Dzhambazov, Katrin Ivanova, Ivan Stoyanov, and Vanya Gaberova—face charges of conspiring to gather sensitive information for a foreign adversary.
Espionage Spanning Two and a Half Years
The alleged spy saga stretched from August 2020 to February 2023, involving covert surveillance on key individuals and hotspots linked to Russia. Prosecutors claim the operation was linked to hostile plans, even abductions. Curiously, during the hearing, the accused kept mum—except for cryptic communications from separate prisons.
The Mastermind and His Martial Arts Fighter
- Orlin Roussev, 45 – From Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, his seaside guesthouse, now shut, served as the nerve centre for UK and Europe-wide spying.
- Bizer Dzhambazov, 41 – Resides in Harrow, North West London.
- Katrin Ivanova, 31 – Shares the Harrow address with Dzhambazov.
- Ivan Stoyanov, 31 – Based in Greenford, West London, with a background in amateur mixed martial arts and combat sambo.
- Vanya Gaberova, 29 – Lives in Churchway, North West London.
Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram branded Roussev’s property as the “operating hub” for espionage. Meanwhile, Stoyanov’s martial arts past adds a striking edge to the accused’s profile.
Connection to Notorious Fugitive “Jan Marsalek”
The gang reportedly conspired with “Jan Marsalek,” a fugitive ex-COO of Austrian firm Wirecard, currently wanted in Germany for fraud. Roussev allegedly received direct orders from Marsalek, believed to be hiding in Belarus.
The five face further trial at the Old Bailey come October 13.
