Chaos at Gillingham vs Rotherham: Spectators Storm Pitch in Mass Brawl
Nearly a dozen football fans caused chaos after the Gillingham FC vs Rotherham United match on Saturday 30 April 2022. Football Banning Orders Handed Down
On 8 and 9 December, Medway magistrates cracked down on the offenders. Football Banning Orders were issued alongside community service or jail sentences to those who pled guilty to public order offences linked to the disorder. One no-show, James Mackenzie, 23, was arrested during a later Gillingham match and copped 200 hours community service plus a three-year ban.
“There is absolutely no place in football or anywhere else in society for the type of violence and behaviour that occurred following this particular match,” said Superintendent Ray Quiller of Kent Police.
“Football Banning Orders remain an important power to improve safety at matches. We will continue to use them against offenders who threaten public safety.”
“We are proud of our strong relationships with football clubs across Kent and hope these results show how seriously we take safety.”
Hundreds of Hours and Years of Bans for Troublemakers
Among those punished:
- Kingsley Dume, 25, jailed eight weeks and slapped with a seven-year ban.
- Bobby Coulham, 25, handed 150 hours community service and a five-year ban.
- Keegan Mount, 23, given 120 hours community service and a three-year ban.
- Charlie Allen, 25, 150 hours community service plus three-year ban.
- Jack Simmonds, 25, 150 hours service and three-year ban.
- Others received similar penalties, with bans ranging from three to ten years.
Trials Pending and Not Guilty Pleas
Some defendants pleaded not guilty and are slated for trial, while others failed to appear in court. The crackdown sends a clear message: pitch invasions and violence will not be tolerated.
