Fraud Gang Jailed for Targeting Elderly in £200k Scam

Four fraudsters behind a slick £200,000 courier scam have landed hefty jail sentences. Arris Qumar, 26, Awais Zaman, 21, Mya Haskins, 19, and Adriana Andrade, 19, conned vulnerable victims by pretending to be police officers. Their chilling scheme saw them trick victims across Newcastle, South Tyneside, Durham, Darlington, and West Yorkshire into handing over cash, valuables, and bank details.

How the Scam Worked

The gang used a common trick called courier fraud. They cold-called victims, lying that their bank accounts were compromised. Victims were told to withdraw large sums or buy expensive items as “evidence” of police investigations. One Darlington victim alone parted with a staggering £127,000.

The North-East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU) cracked the case after six victims came forward last September. Police swooped on addresses in London, Warwickshire, and the West Midlands in late 2021 and early 2022, arresting the ringleaders.

Justice Served at Teesside Crown Court

All four defendants pleaded or were found guilty of fraud by false representation. On Friday, December 9, they were sentenced to over 10 years combined behind bars:

  • Arris Qumar (Coventry) – 3 years 8 months
  • Awais Zaman (Coventry) – 2 years 10 months
  • Mya Haskins (Rugby) – 1 year 10 months
  • Adriana Andrade (Rugby) – 1 year 4 months

Police Warn Public to Stay Alert

“This was a particularly callous crime targeting elderly and vulnerable people,” said Detective Constable Andy Thompson. “We thank the brave victims who helped bring these criminals to justice.” “Please talk to elderly relatives about scams. If anyone calls out of the blue or asks for money or valuables, hang up and report it.” Detective Inspector Shaun Fordy added: “Police or your bank will never cold call asking for money. Report any suspicious calls immediately.”
