Teen Fined £300 for Punching Ticket Inspectors at Sittingbourne Station

A Greenwich teen has landed in hot water after attacking three Southeastern ticket inspectors during a fare dispute at Sittingbourne train station.

Violent Clash Over Fare Dodging

Hasan Sasmaz, 19, from Abbey Wood, was handed a £300 fine and a 12-month community order at Bexley Magistrates’ Court on September 19. The violent incident unfolded on August 2, 2023, when Sasmaz tried to dodge his train fare.

The situation quickly spiralled out of control with Sasmaz punching one officer in the face and grabbing another by the throat. District Judge Karen Hammond slammed the “nasty and violent” assaults.

Shock and Remorse

Prosecutor Sophie Young revealed the inspectors called Sasmaz’s violence “shocking,” saying he appeared intent on causing harm. Thankfully, none of the officers suffered lasting injuries.

In his defence, Sasmaz claimed he acted in self-defence and expressed regret. “I apologise for my actions and I am going to change my life,” he told the court. His lawyer added he was “embarrassed” and hoped to rebuild his future in construction.

Judge: No Excuse for Violence

Judge Hammond was unimpressed, pointing out Sasmaz had admitted his actions weren’t self-defence. She reminded the court that turning 18 doesn’t instantly grant maturity.

Sasmaz must now complete 120 hours unpaid work and pay £100 compensation to each victim, deducted from his benefits. The judge warned: “The public would be rightly appalled by the casual and routine violence that those in a public role encounter. This turned out to be a very expensive rail journey indeed.”
