Tragedy Strikes as Baby Dies at Stockport Nursery

A grieving couple are sounding the alarm after their nine-month-old daughter died in a shocking nursery mishap. Genevieve “Gigi” Meehan was placed face-down, strapped to a bean bag at Tiny Toes nursery in Stockport — and never woke up.

Parents Demand Tougher Nursery Safety Laws

John and Katie Meehan, from Greater Manchester, accuse the childcare system of failing children across the UK. Katie, a solicitor, said, “A child can’t die in a nursery. It’s unthinkable.”

She added, “There’s story after story now, of kids facing physical and mental abuse all over the country. It’s frightening. Losing Gigi has destroyed us, but we’re fighting so this never happens again.”

The couple met Education Minister Olivia Bailey in London to push for:

  • Mandatory CCTV in all nurseries
  • Clearer guidance on safe sleeping practices
  • Stricter Ofsted inspections

Nursery Worker Jailed After Baby’s Death

Kate Roughley, 39, the nursery worker convicted of manslaughter in Gigi’s death, was sentenced to 14 years in jail in 2024. CCTV footage revealed Roughley ignored the baby’s desperate cries, leaving her swaddled and strapped on a bean bag for over 90 minutes.

The court heard Roughley lied about checking on the babies. Genevieve died from asphyxiation caused by an unsafe sleeping environment.

Childcare Scandals Rock Britain’s Nurseries

The Meehans’ campaign comes amid a wave of childcare horror stories:

  • Vincent Chan, 45, jailed for 18 years after secretly filming seven years of sexual abuse at Bright Horizons nursery in North London.
  • Nathan Bennett, 30, locked up for 30 years for raping and abusing toddlers in Bristol.
  • Fairytales Day Nursery in Dudley pleaded guilty to corporate manslaughter after baby Noah Sibanda, 14 months, died in circumstances chillingly similar to Gigi’s.

Nursery whistleblower “Ellie” revealed, “Managers sweep things under the carpet. Staff are scared to speak up in case they lose their jobs.”

Government Vows Crackdown on Nursery Failures

Education Minister Olivia Bailey praised the Meehans’ bravery, promising: “What they want is what we are delivering.” The government is reviewing CCTV rules, overhauling Ofsted inspections, and updating safe sleep policies.

Ofsted announced inspections will be more frequent and surprise visits increased to offer parents up-to-date information. Yvette Stanley, Ofsted’s National Director for Regulation and Social Care, said, “Parents must have the facts to make informed choices.”

However, experts warn CCTV isn’t a cure-all due to privacy and building challenges. Meanwhile, the Meehans vow to keep fighting until no other child suffers like baby Gigi.
