Armed Police in London Hand Back Guns Amid Murder Charge Shock

Armed officers across London have started handing in their weapons, sparking alarm just weeks after a Metropolitan Police marksman was charged with murder over the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Chris Kaba last year.

Home Secretary Launches Urgent Review

Suella Braverman has launched a full review into armed policing procedures following the mass backlash from officers worried about facing legal action for split-second decisions on the frontline.

“Armed officers put their lives on the line daily to protect society from the most dangerous criminals,” Braverman said in a statement on Sunday. “They face split-second decisions under extreme pressure and deserve our full support.”

Officers’ Fear Sparks Crisis in Armed Policing

The murder charge has caused widespread unease. Many firearms officers fear prosecution for doing their job, leading to a number surrendering their weapons in protest. The Met has since deployed an extra 123 officers as a stop-gap to keep London safe.

While most armed officers remain on duty, help is being flown in from neighbouring forces to fill gaps from Saturday evening onwards. The Met stressed this is a temporary measure as it works to restore confidence.

Suella Braverman Backs Armed Police 100%

Braverman promised unwavering support for armed officers, vowing to ensure they can perform their life-saving roles without the looming threat of legal fallout.

“I will do everything possible to support our armed police officers in serving and protecting the public,” she affirmed.
