Tragedy at Wimbledon School as Car Crashes Into Building

A horrific crash at The Study Prep School in Wimbledon has claimed the life of an eight-year-old girl and left several others injured. The shocking incident unfolded on Camp Road, SW19, on Thursday, July 6, when a car smashed through the school’s fence and hit a building.

Emergency Response: Rapid and Massive

Police were alerted at 09:54 to the terrifying scene. In response, a whopping 35 police vehicles, alongside paramedics, rushed to the school. Officers administered first aid on-site as they worked feverishly to save the victims.

Devastating Loss and Critical Injuries

  • An eight-year-old girl tragically died at the scene despite emergency efforts.
  • Another eight-year-old girl remains in a life-threatening condition in hospital.
  • A woman in her 40s is also in critical condition.
  • Several others, including a seven-month-old baby girl, suffered less serious injuries and were treated in hospital.

Authorities confirmed the victims were predominantly parents and caregivers, not school staff.

Driver Arrested, Investigation Underway

The driver, a 46-year-old Wimbledon woman, was held at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She was taken to hospital but her injuries are not life-threatening. She is currently on bail and awaiting further questioning in late July.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are scouring CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses as they piece together what happened. The vehicle involved has been removed for detailed forensic examination.

Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland, local policing commander for southwest London, expressed deep sympathy for the bereaved families and praised the emergency crews’ swift and professional response. She urged the public to avoid speculation and assured that support is being offered to all affected.
