Jailed and Banned: Reckless Driver Caught by DNA After A10 Crash
Azer Urger, 20, slammed the brakes on his freedom after a savage smash on the A10 in October 2017. On Friday 17 May, the link="linked">Old Bailey locked him up for three-and-a-half years and banned him from driving for nearly six years.
Speeding Away from Cops Ends in Disaster
On 4 October 2017, police units hunting gang crime spotted Urger speeding in the opposite direction. Panicked, he drove on the wrong side of the road and crashed into a bus and a moped rider.
- Urger fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle on High Road.
- He was uninsured at the time.
- The moped rider suffered nasty leg injuries and was airlifted to hospital, only going home after four months.
Forensics Nail the Guilty Driver
DNA on the gearstick and handbrake plus fingerprints on the driver’s door proved Urger was behind the wheel. Despite the mountain of evidence, he denied everything, claiming he’d sold the car weeks earlier.
He was arrested twice — first shortly after the crash, then again a year later when charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He was held in custody.
Police and Transport Chiefs Slam Dangerous Driving
“Urger spun lie after lie, but forensics left no doubt he caused horrific injuries. If he’d stopped when told, the victim wouldn’t have suffered and Urger wouldn’t be in prison now,” said Detective Constable Sid Acharya of the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command.
“The Met is cracking down on high-risk drivers to keep our streets safe. Anyone caught driving dangerously will face the music.”
Siwan Hayward, Director at Transport for London, added: “Urger’s reckless driving caused serious harm. We hope his sentence warns others – break the road rules and you will be caught. Don’t risk lives or your future.”
