Jury Sworn in for Baby Death Manslaughter Trial at Old Bailey
A jury of five men and seven women has been sworn in for the high-profile manslaughter trial of a couple accused over the tragic death of their baby daughter. The little girl’s remains were found at a Brighton allotment last year, sparking widespread shock.
Technical Glitch Delays Start of Trial
The jury was originally selected a week ago and was set to be sworn in the day before. But Judge Mark Lucraft, Recorder of London, revealed technical issues delayed proceedings at the Old Bailey.
Couple Face Multiple Serious Charges
Defendants Constance Marten, 36, and Mark Gordon, 49, stand accused of manslaughter by gross negligence in the death of baby Victoria. The timeline of alleged neglect spans from January 4 to February 27, 2023.
- Perverting the course of justice
- Concealing the birth of a child
- Child cruelty
- Causing or allowing the death of a child
Neither Marten nor Gordon has a fixed address. Both deny all charges.
Trial Expected to Last Until March
Judge Lucraft told jurors the trial could run until March 8, 2024, as evidence is carefully examined at the Central Criminal Court.
