Protest Chaos on the M25: Two Arrested on Motorway Gantries
Kent Police swooped on the M25 after activists staged protests on motorway gantries, causing temporary road closures and chaos. A 71-year-old man from Cornwall and a 75-year-old woman from Somerset were both arrested and remain in custody.
Early Morning Standoffs at Junctions 4 and 1A
Officers were called to junction 4 at around 7am on Wednesday, 9 November 2022, closing the carriageway briefly to detain the man. Just half an hour later, at junction 1A, a woman was arrested following a similar protest. Police acted quickly to clear the scene and get traffic moving again.
Three Women Charged in Related M25 Protest Incidents
- On Monday 7 November, a woman was arrested after being removed from a gantry near the Dartford Crossing at junction 1A. The motorway stayed open to minimise disruption.
- On Tuesday 8 November, two more women were arrested near junction 1B during plans for another gantry protest.
Theresa Norton, 54, of Scarborough, has been charged with intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance relating to the junction 1A incident. She appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court the same day.
Lucia Whittaker-de-Abreu, 33, from Derby, and Molly Berry, 70, from Buckinghamshire, also faced the same charge and were due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 9 November.
Police Clampdown Amid Rising Motorway Protests
