Kent Police Hits First Covid-19 Breach Charge in County
Kent Police have slapped the county’s first charge linked to breaking Government social distancing rules. The man in the spotlight? Jagjit Sidhu, 58, from Gravesend.
Repeated Offender Snared for Flouting Lockdown
Sidhu faces charges under the new Covid-19 laws for ignoring restrictions on movement during the emergency period and refusing police orders to go home. Officers first warned him multiple times between April 14 and 20 but he kept defying the rules.
On April 21, cops caught up with him on Peacock Street, Gravesend. Despite repeated attempts to get him to comply, Sidhu ignored advice and was arrested.
Bailed to Face Court and Additional Charge
Sidhu is due in Medway Magistrates’ Court on June 17. Alongside breaching lockdown laws, he’ll also face a charge of being drunk and disorderly in public.
Police Plea: Follow the Rules or Face the Consequences
“This is the first charge issued for breaking Covid-19 rules in Kent. Our officers work hard to explain why these measures matter and only enforce as a last resort,” said Chief Inspector Neil Loudon, Kent Police’s North Kent District Commander. “It’s a tough time for everyone and we urge the public to stick to Government guidance.”
