Kitchen Blaze in Burgess Hill Sparks Fire Safety Warning
Firefighters are sounding the alarm on kitchen safety after a house fire tore through a home in Burgess Hill. They urge residents to keep their hobs clear to prevent similar incidents.
Neighbours’ Quick Action Helps Put Out Blaze
On Tuesday, April 23, crews from Burgess Hill and Hurstpierpoint rushed to a house fire on Friars Close in Hassocks. Neighbours heard the smoke alarm and dialled 999 without delay.
The fire started when the occupant left the hob on, igniting items left too close to the cooker. Firefighters arrived quickly and doused the flames, stopping the fire from spreading further.
Significant Damage But No Injuries
Though the kitchen suffered major damage, thankfully no one was hurt. After tackling the blaze, firefighters visited nearby homes to dish out vital fire safety tips and check that everyone was safe.
Watch Manager Issues Urgent Kitchen Safety Advice
“Cooking fires make up over half of all accidental home fires,” said Watch Manager James Crockett. “Most happen because people get distracted and leave things unattended.”
“Stay alert in the kitchen. If you need to step away, always take pans off the heat. Keep towels, oven gloves, and anything flammable well away from your hob.”
“Thankfully, the occupant’s working smoke alarms alerted their neighbours. Install smoke detectors on every floor and test them regularly. They give you crucial early warning to escape safely.”
“If a fire starts, remember: get out, stay out, and call 999 immediately.”
