Hertfordshire Police Crack Down on Dangerous Dog Walking After Calf Killed
Hertfordshire Police have launched a fresh warning to dog owners following a string of livestock attacks, including the heartbreaking death of a newborn calf.
Rural Cops Hit Farms with New Safety Push
Officers from the Rural Operational Support Team (ROST) toured local farms yesterday, chatting with farmers and putting up signs urging walkers to behave responsibly when near animals on farmland.
The crackdown comes after several recent incidents where dogs ran loose, terrifying livestock — with one case tragically ending in a calf’s death.
Keep Dogs on Leads or Face Fines
Police are stressing the importance of keeping dogs on short leads near farm animals and sticking strictly to footpaths. Under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act, letting your dog worry livestock is a criminal offence, punishable with hefty fines and legal action.
“We understand how enjoyable it is to walk dogs in the countryside, but it’s vital that owners remain vigilant and keep their pets under close control, especially near livestock. A simple precaution like using a short lead can prevent unnecessary suffering for farmers and their animals.”
Spot Livestock Worrying? Call 999
If you witness a dog worrying livestock, call 999 immediately. If the episode has finished, report it online or call 101. The Rural Operational Support Team will keep patrolling Hertfordshire farms to protect animals and support farmers.
