Lorry Driver Jailed for Killing Off-Duty PC in Essex Crash
A lorry driver prone to falling asleep behind the wheel has been locked up for seven years after a fatal crash on the A1060 in Roxwell, Essex.
Sleep-Deprived Driver Causes Tragedy
38-year-old Harrison was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and banned from the roads for five years. At trial, it emerged Harrison regularly got just five to six hours of sleep and relied on “strong doses of caffeine” to stay alert while driving long hauls.
Experts revealed he was particularly vulnerable to dozing off on familiar, monotonous routes — exactly where the deadly crash happened.
Beloved Police Officer Lost
The victim was PC Tris Baker, 41, a children and young person officer from Brentwood adored by his family, colleagues, and community. The crash has left a lasting scar on all who knew him.
“PC Baker was a much-loved family man and colleague and is dearly missed,” said Inspector Mark Fraser, who led the investigation. “Our thoughts remain with his partner, Faye, and his family during this awful time.”
Justice Served, But Grief Remains
Inspector Fraser described the tragedy as utterly avoidable and caused by reckless driving. While no sentence can undo the damage, the seven-year prison term may offer some solace to PC Baker’s loved ones.
