Lucy Letby Loses Bid to Appeal Baby Murder Convictions
Appeal Rejected by Court of Appeal
Lucy Letby, the former neonatal nurse convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six more at Countess of Chester Hospital, has been blocked from appealing her convictions. The 34-year-old from Hereford was found guilty in August 2023 for crimes committed between 2015 and 2016.
At a brief hearing today, Dame Victoria Sharp and Lord Justice Holroyde refused Letby’s request to challenge her convictions. The judges have not revealed full reasons behind the decision, keeping key details of the appeal bid under wraps for legal reasons.
Dame Victoria Sharp said: “Having heard her application, we have decided to refuse leave to appeal on all grounds and refuse all associated applications. A full judgment will be handed down in due course.”
Failed Legal Arguments
Letby’s legal team had pushed for an appeal following a lengthy two-and-a-half-day hearing last month. Their arguments centered on four issues, notably the trial judge’s rejection of certain legal applications. However, the latest ruling extinguishes hopes of overturning her convictions.
Fresh Trial Looms Despite Appeal Setback
Despite the failed appeal, Letby faces a new challenge. She is due for retrial at Manchester Crown Court this June, charged with attempting to murder a baby girl, known as Child K, in February 2016.
Case Continues to Grip Public
The original murky trial and the failed appeal have kept the public hooked on this chilling case, spotlighting the disturbing crimes and the ongoing legal battles that followed Letby’s convictions.
