Maidstone Beggar Slapped with Five-Year Court Order
Daniel Nicholson Banned from Pestering Shoppers
Daniel Nicholson, 37, has been hit with a tough five-year court order aimed at stamping out his relentless begging in Maidstone town centre. Despite having nearby lodgings, Nicholson has continually hassled shoppers for cash throughout 2024.
Court Cracks Down After Multiple Offences
On October 3, Nicholson admitted to eight breaches of a public space protection order at Medway Magistrates’ Court. Earlier this year in January, he confessed to nearly 20 other similar offences linked to a community protection notice.
Kent Police pushed for a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO), which the court approved. The order covers key areas including Week Street, High Street, King Street, Jubilee Square, and Mill Street, barring Nicholson from:
- Asking strangers for money, food, or any items
- Sitting, lying, or loitering near cash machines or doorways to beg
- Using signs, containers, animals, or any other tools to beg
The CBO also forces Nicholson to engage with support services.
Police Warning: Jail Time if Begging Continues
“Nicholson has continued to beg for money even when he had access to safe and secure accommodation but pretended to be homeless,” said Sergeant Dan Bartlett.
“His actions can intimidate the public and he has ignored support from our officers and partners. This order is a last resort to protect Maidstone’s residents, businesses, and visitors from harassment. If Nicholson breaches the order, he could face prison.”
