Maidstone Sex Offender Jailed for Child Abuse Images
Peter Smith, 74, from Maidstone, has been locked up for two years after being caught making and viewing indecent images of children. The convicted sex offender tried to dodge blame by claiming the filthy content came from second-hand devices.
History of Abuse and Denial
Smith, already under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) following previous similar convictions, used a monitored tablet in December 2021 to search for indecent images and leave explicit comments. When police raided his home, they seized a mobile phone and two tablets, uncovering his illegal activity.
Despite pleading guilty to breaching the SHPO by possessing internet-connected devices without informing police, Smith denied responsibility for the actual indecent images. He argued that previous owners or visitors were to blame.
Jailed After Lengthy Trial
After a detailed investigation and trial at Maidstone Court, the judge sentenced Smith to two years imprisonment on 8 September 2025. Officials slammed his stubborn refusal to accept responsibility throughout the case.
Strong Words from the Police
Detective Sergeant Si Groves said: “Smith is a prolific offender with a deep-rooted tendency to keep breaking the law, showing no regard for victims.”
He added that Smith was “on the cusp of irritating” the court with his attitude. Strict conditions will be imposed on Smith after his release.
