Man Charged Over Shocking Attempted Kidnap of Girl in Brighton

A 24-year-old man has been charged after an eight-year-old girl was nearly snatched in broad daylight in Brighton.

Michael Belhawla Faces Serious Charges

Michael Belhawla, from Auckland Drive, Brighton, has been charged with attempted kidnap and attempted sexual assault by touching. The Crown Prosecution Service approved the charges. Belhawla is due to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 9 May.

Disturbing Attack Caught by Quick-Thinking Bystanders

The terrifying incident happened at around 8.25am on Saturday, 5 May. The young girl was heading home after posting a letter on North Road when Belhawla grabbed her as she turned into Tidy Street, pushing her to the ground.

Two passers-by spotted the attack and shouted at the attacker, forcing him to flee. The girl was left severely shaken, with minor grazes, but did not require hospital treatment.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Detective Inspector Lee Horner urged anyone with information to come forward. “We are still keen to trace any witnesses who may have valuable information which could assist our investigation,” he said.
