Drunk Man Jailed for Kicking and Spitting on Police Officers in Kingsbury
A 58-year-old man has been locked up for six months after attacking two police officers while drunk in Kingsbury. Theiventhiram Balakumar, who has no fixed address, was found guilty of assaulting emergency workers at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on 6 May.
Chaos on Princes Avenue: Officers Attacked After Responding to Drunk Man
The drama unfolded on 9 September 2020 when officers from the North West Command Unit were called to Princes Avenue, NW9. They found Balakumar collapsed and intoxicated at the rear of a property.
When officers asked him to get up, he lashed out. Balakumar kicked one officer in the leg. When a second officer tried to detain him for the assault, Balakumar spat aggressively in their face.
“Abhorrent” Attack on Police Leaves Officer Hospitalised
“Police officers never know what they will face when they attend an incident,” said Insp Sammi Elfituri from the North West BCU. “Balakumar, who admitted to drinking, lashed out when approached by officers.”
“The fact he spat in an officer’s face is abhorrent. That officer had to attend hospital and endure a nerve-wracking wait to see if they had been infected.”
“Thankfully they weren’t, but that does not lessen Balakumar’s disgusting behaviour. He has rightly been held to account.”
Convicted After Denial of Charges
Balakumar was arrested and denied assaulting the officers. However, after a court hearing, he was charged and found guilty of two counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker.
