Man Denies Helping Terror Suspect Daniel Khalife After Prison Break

A 25-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to charges of assisting Daniel Khalife, the former soldier who escaped from HMP Wandsworth in September 2023.

Court Drama at Westminster

Imran Chowdhury, from Chingford, east London, appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court to deny aiding the prison escapee. Arrested by the Metropolitan Police in January 2024, Chowdhury faced the charge via post later in December.

Wearing a white shirt and black jumper, he confirmed his details during a brief hearing. District Judge Briony Clark declared the case too serious for magistrates, sending it to Snaresbrook Crown Court with a hearing set for 4 February 2025.

Chowdhury was granted bail on condition he stays at his home in Parade Gardens, Chingford. Meanwhile, authorities ruled out any further action against a 25-year-old woman arrested earlier this year on related suspicions.

Crown Claims: £400 Withdrawal for Escape Essentials

Prosecutor Emma Harraway told the court:

“The defendant is charged with assisting Khalife, whose escape grabbed global headlines. The Crown alleges he was with Khalife on the escape day, took him to an ATM, and withdrew £400.”

“This money helped Khalife buy food, disguise clothing, and mobile phone top-ups.”

Who Is Daniel Khalife?

The 23-year-old former soldier was convicted in November 2024 of breaching the Official Secrets and Terrorism Acts after spying for Iran. He had already confessed to escaping from HMP Wandsworth, sparking a nationwide manhunt.

Khalife was found hiding by a canal towpath just miles from the prison on 9 September 2023. Sources say the British Army recruit, who joined at 16, was frustrated that his Iranian roots blocked necessary security clearances for intelligence work. He then began leaking secrets to Iranian agents.

Daring Escape and Manhunt

Khalife’s prison break was brazen: he hid under a food delivery truck leaving the jail. Despite alarms, a prison officer waved the lorry through the gates unchecked. He evaded capture for four days before police finally tracked him down.

Further updates will follow after Chowdhury’s next appearance at Snaresbrook Crown Court.
