A 38-year-old man has been locked up for seven years after a brutal sexual assault in Knottingley shocked the local community. Lee Belsham attacked a woman out of nowhere on Sowgate Lane park on the afternoon of March 6.
Attack Caught on CCTV, Witnesses Spot Fleeing Suspect
The victim was out for a walk when Belsham suddenly pounced, tackling her to the ground and committing a terrifying sexual assault. Witnesses saw a man fleeing the scene, and CCTV footage helped police quickly identify Belsham as the attacker.
Guilty Plea Leads to Tough Sentence at Leeds Crown Court
Belsham, once of Ferrybridge Road, Knottingley, admitted the assault during a court hearing last month. On Friday (October 6), Leeds Crown Court handed him a stiff seven-year prison sentence plus an extended three-year licence period.

“The victim showed immense bravery reporting this horrific crime,” said Detective Inspector Rachel Darling of the Wakefield safeguarding unit. “We hope this sentence helps her find some closure.”

The victim, who remains anonymous, thanked the police for their steadfast support over the past seven months. She said: “I’ve waited for this day and now I’m ready to move on. I won’t let him ruin my life.”
