Man jailed after stabbing uncle to death in Devon village

Brutal killing shocks Brampford Speke

A 37-year-old man has been detained indefinitely in a secure mental health facility after fatally stabbing his 63-year-old uncle in a quiet Devon village. Corin Harper-Davis, from London, pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility at Exeter Crown Court for the deadly attack on Jonathan Harper on 31 July 2024.

Police were called to the property in Brampford Speke following reports of a man in cardiac arrest. Emergency crews tried to save Jonathan Harper, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem revealed he had four stab wounds, one of which was fatal.

Mental health breakdown led to tragic attack

The court heard Harper-Davis had suffered a serious mental health decline before the killing, diagnosed with a psychotic illness. His uncle had gone to support him but was attacked without warning after a shopping trip.

Harper-Davis fled but was arrested nearby. He has been held in a secure hospital since October 2024. Judge Anna Richardson sentenced him to a hospital order under Section 37 of the Mental Health Act with a Section 41 restriction, meaning he will remain detained indefinitely.

Police praise community and family strength

“This is a truly tragic case, and I would like to pass on my thanks and condolences to Jonathan’s partner and son, both of whom have shown real bravery and compassion at an incredibly difficult time,” said Detective Inspector Guy Biggar, Senior Investigating Officer for Devon and Cornwall Police.

“I also thank the Harper family for their support and the residents of Brampford Speke who acted swiftly to assist both victim and suspect until police arrived.”

Jonathan Harper is remembered as a kind, caring man devoted to helping his nephew through tough times.
