Shock as Met Police vow crackdown on rogue officers ahead of Carrick sentencing
Assistant Commissioner Barbara Gray, the Met’s Professionalism lead, has issued a powerful statement as David Carrick’s sentencing looms at Southwark Crown Court this Monday.
‘Bravery of Victims at the Forefront’
Gray said, “It’s been nearly three weeks since David Carrick entered his final guilty plea. He admitted to the most heinous crimes against multiple victims.”
She added, “Over the next two days, our focus is entirely on the victims. They have shown incredible courage in speaking out. They deserve justice and to have their voices heard.”
Met Police Set to Root Out Corruption and Abuse
The Met Commissioner has pledged to raise standards and restore Londoners’ trust. A dedicated 123-strong investigation unit has been established to target officers and staff suspected of domestic abuse or sexual misconduct.
A new Anti-Corruption and Abuse Command is also up and running, probing those who abuse their power, both on and off duty, in person or online.
Major Overhauls Underway
- Heavy investment in intelligence and specialist investigators is already in place.
- A nationwide audit of police databases is underway to uncover hidden intel on officers and staff.
- Project Onyx is reviewing a decade’s worth of closed cases involving professional misconduct, from inappropriate language to serious sexual offences.
“While many cases were likely handled properly, we’ve missed patterns of behaviour before,” Gray admitted. “We’re determined to fix that now.”
Encouraging Whistleblowers and Public Involvement
The Met has launched an internal appeal urging all officers and staff to report corruption and abuse. An anti-corruption hotline has been set up, in partnership with Crimestoppers, allowing the public to report offending anonymously.
External stakeholders, especially groups from the Violence Against Women and Girls sector, are being brought in to help monitor and shape the work.
The crackdown is just beginning, but the Met promises transparency and a zero-tolerance approach to those who betray public trust.
