London Cop Found Guilty of Assault Over Bus Fare Row
Metropolitan Police officer PC Perry Lathwood, 50, from Normans Bay, East Sussex, has been found guilty of assault after wrongly arresting a woman accused of dodging a bus fare. The verdict came from Deputy Senior District Judge Tan Ikram at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
Bus Fare Bust Turns Ugly
The incident unfolded when Jocelyn Agyemang was dropping her son off at her mother’s house. Police, helping ticket inspectors, stopped her after she got off a bus and asked for proof of payment. In a rush, Ms Agyemang invited the inspector to walk with her. But PC Lathwood stepped in, grabbing her arm to halt her.
Judge Slams Cop for Overreaction
Judge Ikram called Lathwood’s conduct “not necessary” and ruled the officer “overreacted.” He said Ms Agyemang was tricky but there was no proper reason to arrest her. “The officer made an error of judgment and overreacted. Handcuffing only made things worse,” the judge said.
He also shot down Lathwood’s claim he acted to protect the child, branding it “fanciful” and lacking credibility. The judge found him guilty of assault.
Verdict Hits Police Trust Hard
PC Lathwood showed no reaction as the verdict was read. Sentencing is set for June 14.
Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist expressed deep regret, saying: “This verdict is a major setback in rebuilding trust with Londoners. We offer our sincere apologies to the woman affected and the wider community.”
