Motorcyclist tried to dodge blame after crash but cops had him nailed.
Hit-and-Run in Lancing
At around 11pm on February 9, a collision between a Mercedes and a Honda CBR 125 rocked South Farm Road. The biker, with a pillion passenger, sped off without leaving any details.
Denial Didn’t Hold Up
Police tracked down George Argent, the registered keeper of the bike, who insisted he wasn’t the rider at the time. But officers spotted him with a visible injury and witnesses placed him at the scene.
He was later ID’d at an identity parade, yet refused to come clean. A dive into his phone showed he’d confessed to friends he was behind the wheel.
Justice Served
Argent, 18, from Tower Road, Lancing, was slapped with charges including perverting the course of justice, driving without due care, driving without a valid licence, and failing to stop after a crash.
On November 8 at Lewes Crown Court, he pled guilty. The judge handed him a 22-week suspended prison sentence, 120 hours of unpaid work, 15 rehab sessions, and a one-year driving ban.
Police Speak Out
PC Thomas Van Der Wee said: “Argent went to great lengths to try to avoid being prosecuted for leaving the scene of the collision. It meant we had to check his claims, organise an identity parade, and analyse his mobile phones.”
“This case shows we’re determined to catch anti-social riders and that those who try to deceive police will be caught and prosecuted.”
