Mystery of Michaela McAreavey’s Murder: New Investigation Unveiled

Journalists Darragh MacIntyre and Allison Morris have returned to Mauritius to shine a fresh light on the tragic, unsolved murder of Michaela McAreavey. The daughter of Gaelic football legend Mickey Harte, Michaela was found strangled in her hotel bathtub during her honeymoon with her new husband, John.

Two Acquitted, No One Convicted

In a high-profile trial in 2012, two former workers at the luxury resort where Michaela stayed were acquitted. From that day to now, no one has been held responsible for her brutal killing.

Behind the Scenes: Police Failings and Political Insights

Darragh and Allison dig deep, speaking to a Detective Inspector involved in the case, lawyers, the defendants themselves, and even a former Prime Minister of Mauritius. Their investigation exposes alleged police blunders and unanswered questions that have dogged the case for over a decade.

Personal Stories and Unseen Case Files

The series features emotional interviews with Michaela’s widower John McAreavey and her brother Mark. They recall her vibrant spirit, achievements, and the heart-wrenching fallout of her murder.

With exclusive access to original case files, the journalists attempt to piece together what really happened and whether justice for Michaela is still possible.

Darragh MacIntyre says: “It was a total eye-opener. I thought I knew the story of Michaela’s killing and her family’s fight for justice. I was wrong. The catalogue of police investigative failings was jaw-dropping – just one of many challenges the family faced.”

Allison Morris adds: “Michaela’s murder has haunted me ever since I first left Mauritius in 2011. I had an incomplete picture of what happened, and that troubled me. This documentary allows us to dig deeper and ask why no one has been convicted in this shocking case.”
