Essex Police and RSPCA Make Gruesome Dog Rescue in Great Dunmow

Essex Police and the RSPCA uncovered a horrific dog cruelty scene in Great Dunmow after suspecting stolen pets were hidden in a grim set of buildings. The raid revealed nearly 40 dogs and puppies living in appalling conditions — matted in faeces, starved of food and water, and trapped in filthy, dark outbuildings.

Shocking Conditions: Starvation, Disease, and Injuries

According to Chelmsford Magistrates, many dogs were underweight with overgrown nails, and several suffered from mites and worms. Six puppies were rushed to intensive care battling parvovirus — tragically, three didn’t survive. Others were found with ear infections and injuries suspiciously consistent with illegal dog fighting.

The grim site included a static caravan, stables, and multiple outbuildings. Police found a tethered Rottweiler and a Jack Russell with eight puppies roaming freely, alongside 18 other dogs, mostly terriers, spaniels, and lurchers.

Owners Deny Charges But Face Justice

Prosecutor Terrence Newman revealed that none of the dogs were stolen, although many were registered under fake names. A man on scene initially claimed all the dogs were fine — later leaving a chilling voicemail saying, “the yard has been raided, it’s over.”

Mary Connors, 55, from Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire, and two men from West London arrested in connection with the kennel faced animal welfare charges. Connors insisted she was managing everything properly and seeking licencing, as shown on court bodycam footage.

Despite their denials of failing to provide adequate food, water, bedding, and veterinary care, Connors and one man were found guilty after missing their court trial. Bench warrants have been issued for their arrests, while the third man was acquitted.

Evidence of Dog Fighting and Cruelty

Newman described a black-and-white female terrier cross with extensive scarring — a victim of brutal dog fighting. A vet’s examination confirmed the scars on her head and neck were consistent with fighting injuries.

This shocking case exposes the dark underbelly of illegal dog breeding and fighting in Essex, raising urgent calls for tougher enforcement and animal protection.
